New Delhi, Oct 14 (NationPress) In response to Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's visit to the home of Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, who tragically took his own life, Congress leader Ajay Rai remarked on Tuesday that Gandhi’s presence had a profound effect.

“Our leader, Rahul Gandhi, came to the site, meeting with everyone and extending his unwavering support. Rahul Gandhi, a leader who stands steadfast, encouraged others to join him,” Rai expressed, underscoring Gandhi’s influence during this sensitive and sorrowful time.

This statement came after Gandhi's visit to the family, which was soon followed by a meeting with Union Minister Chirag Paswan.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi met with the family of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, who ended his life on October 7 in Chandigarh. The officer, a Dalit, reportedly endured systemic caste-based discrimination throughout his career.

Gandhi termed the incident a “tragedy” and called for immediate intervention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

“The Haryana CM promised the family that justice would be served, but three days have elapsed without any action,” Gandhi stated. “Y. Puran Kumar leaves behind two daughters who are now bereft of their father and facing tremendous pressure. This sends a harmful message to millions of Dalits: regardless of your success or intelligence, suppression is possible.”

Labeling the discrimination against the officer as “systematic and deliberate,” Gandhi accused certain officials of actively working to undermine Kumar’s career and reputation over the years.

“This couple is Dalit, and it is evident that there has been systematic discrimination over the years to demoralize this officer,” he added.

Just hours after Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur was placed on leave amid the controversy surrounding Puran Kumar’s suicide, Om Parkash Singh was assigned additional responsibilities as Director General of Police. The government acted in response to demands from Kumar's family for accountability against him and other officers who harassed Puran Kumar.
