Chennai, Dec 7 (NationPress) Light rain is anticipated to persist in various regions of Tamil Nadu until December 12, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC). The northeast monsoon has intensified over the southern districts, bringing with it intermittent showers and overcast skies across much of the state.
As reported by the RMC, Kollidam in Mayiladuthurai district and Uthuvil in Tirunelveli district recorded the highest rainfall within a 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, each receiving 5 cm of rain. Additional areas throughout the southern and delta districts also experienced scattered rainfall during this timeframe.
Experts attribute the current weather conditions to the formation of a low-pressure system over the south Kerala coast and adjacent areas.
As a result of this system, light rain along with thunderstorms is expected in isolated areas across southern districts, some northern districts, Puducherry, and Karaikal on Saturday. From Sunday until December 12, light to moderate rain is projected to occur in several locations throughout Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
The weather officials indicated that while heavy rain is not likely on a widespread scale, sporadic showers may continue, particularly in southern and coastal districts.
For Chennai, the RMC forecasts partly cloudy skies with the potential for light rain accompanied by thunderstorms in isolated areas during the day. While no significant flooding threat has been issued for the state capital, residents are advised to exercise caution during brief rain showers, especially during the evening and nighttime when thunderstorm activity might escalate.
In light of the ongoing weather conditions and the possibility of strong surface winds, the RMC has issued a warning to fishermen, advising against fishing activities until December 10 along the southern Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Kumari Sea.
Squally winds and rough sea conditions are anticipated in these areas, rendering marine activities unsafe during this period.
Officials noted that the ongoing rainfall is likely to benefit agriculture and improve water storage levels across multiple districts. However, district administrations are instructed to remain vigilant and implement precautionary measures to avoid localized waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and other weather-related inconveniences.
The RMC stated it would keep monitoring the developing weather patterns and provide updates as necessary.
