A proposal for this name change was submitted from the Governor's office to President Droupadi Murmu, and the formal approval has now been granted as per a notification from the Governor's House released on Friday afternoon.
The official social media account of the Governor's House has already been updated to reflect the new name, Lok Bhaban.
On March 27, 2023, President Murmu symbolically handed over a key of the then Raj Bhavan to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the request of Governor Ananda Bose, marking the beginning of a new chapter with the people’s Raj Bhavan, referred to as THE JANA RAJ BHABAN.
The notification confirmed that, in accordance with communication from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the name change of 'Raj Bhaban' in Kolkata, along with Flagship House and Darjeeling, has been duly enacted.
The Governor's office has elaborated on the concept of Jana Raj Bhaban, which ultimately led to the renaming process, emphasizing its commitment to serving the populace.
“A fundamental aspect of the Jana Raj Bhaban initiative is its active engagement with the community, ensuring assistance during times of need. Whether addressing violence, natural disasters, or grievances, Jana Raj Bhaban has consistently reached out to those in distress,” the statement highlighted.
