Jaipur, Dec 2 (NationPress) Rajasthan has officially transitioned its Raj Bhavan to Lok Bhavan, marking it as the ninth state in India to embrace this new designation. The notification was issued by Governor Haribhau Bagde, effective from December 1.
In his announcement, Governor Bagde emphasized that the new title symbolizes a departure from colonial legacies, aligning with the essence of Indian democracy.
The Governor pointed out that renaming Raj Bhavan to Lok Bhavan is a momentous step towards shedding a colonial mindset and adopting the values inherent to a democratic India.
He noted that India stands as the world’s largest democracy, with the Preamble of its Constitution commencing with the words, 'We, the People of India'.
"As the world’s largest democracy, our Constitution begins with the phrase 'We, the People of India'. In a true democracy, the populace holds the highest authority. Henceforth, the Governor's residence will be recognized as Lok Bhavan. This change goes beyond mere nomenclature; it embodies the aspirations and sentiments of the public," he remarked.
The Governor further explained that the term Raj is often linked to colonial governance, and this renaming aligns with the Central government’s efforts to eliminate colonial ties from public institutions.
Prior to Rajasthan, eight other states had already replaced Raj Bhavan with Lok Bhavan.
Additionally, preparations are ongoing in Union Territories, where the Governor’s residence is termed Raj Niwas, for similar name changes.
Post-renaming, all official workspaces and documents are being revised.
Government stationery, records, letterheads, and signage are being updated to reflect this new title. Even the digital footprint is being revised.
The official social media accounts of Raj Bhavan have been transitioned to Lok Bhavan, and adjustments are being made across other digital platforms, according to officials.
This change was proposed during the Conference of Governors in 2024 and was officially requested by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in November 2025.
