New Delhi, July 19 (NationPress) A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been submitted to the Supreme Court, urging the Maharashtra Police to file an FIR against Raj Thackeray, the founder of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), due to his speeches that are believed to incite language-based conflict.
The petition claims that Raj Thackeray, in a bid to secure votes in the upcoming Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections, has been delivering incendiary speeches targeting Hindi-speaking individuals. This has reportedly fostered animosity among various groups based on their state of origin, residence, and language, which is detrimental to the preservation of social harmony and poses a threat to the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India.
Additionally, it was noted that during a rally on July 5, Thackeray endorsed violence against those who do not speak Marathi, suggesting they should be harmed.
The plea argues that his speeches provoke public unrest, transitioning from an anti-Hindi sentiment to the imposition of Marathi on individuals from other states.
It cites numerous instances where MNS supporters, at Thackeray's instigation, have assaulted and harassed people from outside Maharashtra, often destroying their businesses.
Referencing directives from the apex court aimed at preventing mob violence and lynching, the PIL demands that both the central and state authorities act decisively against Thackeray and his political group’s actions.
According to the petition, individuals are living in fear of potential assaults, insults, and humiliation from Thackeray and his party members.
The actions of Raj Thackeray and MNS activists are described as cognizable offenses under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, specifically under various sections.
Filed by advocate Ghanshyam Dayalu Upadhyay, the PIL also calls for the Election Commission of India and the Maharashtra State Election Commission to revoke MNS’s political recognition.
Moreover, the petition requests that electoral bodies nationwide develop policies to monitor and control unlawful activities by political organizations that threaten the nation's sovereignty and integrity.
