Shillong, June 17 (NationPress) The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Meghalaya Police took significant steps on Tuesday by reconstructing the crime scene in Sohra (Cherrapunji) as part of the active investigation into the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, a businessman from Indore.
Accompanied by the forensic team and five suspects, including Sonam Raghuvanshi, the SIT arrived at Wei Sawdong Falls to execute a meticulous reconstruction of the events surrounding Raja's death.
This operation is a pivotal part of the ongoing high-profile investigation.
With assistance from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Meghalaya Police, forensic experts began to map the location to retrace the sequence of events related to the alleged crime.
A senior police official noted that this exercise is expected to provide essential insights and validate confessions and witness statements gathered during the investigation.
The reconstruction took place in a parking area in Sohra, identified as the location where the murder allegedly transpired.
According to Vivek Syiem, the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, a sharp weapon believed to be the murder weapon, which was reportedly purchased by the accused in Guwahati, has been recovered.
"We have secured a sharp weapon that was procured by the accused from Guwahati for the crime," he confirmed.
The SIT is expected to submit the charge sheet within the legal timeframe. While officials have been cautious regarding the details of the evidence, they indicated that forensic mapping and on-site evaluations will be crucial in building a robust case.
The murder of Raja Raghuvanshi has sparked national interest, with increasing demands for justice. The ongoing reconstruction is viewed as a critical milestone in clarifying the details of this disturbing crime.
Additionally, the Meghalaya Police conducted a mental health evaluation of Sonam Raghuvanshi, the primary suspect in Raja's murder, as reported by officials.
According to a police source, Sonam was evaluated at the Meghalaya Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (MIMHANS) for a psychiatric routine examination.
Per the recommendations of the Medical Officer from Ganesh Das Hospital in Shillong, Sonam underwent a mental health assessment at MIMHANS, which concluded that her mental state is stable and sound, as stated by the official.
The decomposed remains of 28-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi were discovered in a gorge beneath the Wei Sawdong parking lot in Sohra-Cherrapunji on June 2, eight days after he and his wife went missing during their honeymoon in this popular tourist destination in northeastern India.
Following Raja's body recovery, the Meghalaya Police established the SIT and adjusted their investigative approach, resulting in the arrest of all five suspects in the murder case. The suspects, including Sonam, were presented at the District and Session Court in Shillong on June 11, where they were ordered into police custody for eight days.
The three SIT teams of Meghalaya Police conducted separate interrogations of the five suspects.
