New Delhi, Dec 4 (NationPress) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh alongside his Russian counterpart Andrei Belousov paid their respects on Thursday by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial, honoring the sacrifices of Indian soldiers who have bravely served their nation.
Earlier in the day, Belousov landed in New Delhi to co-chair the 22nd India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission focused on Military and Military Technical Cooperation alongside Singh.
Minister of State (MoS) for Defence Sanjay Seth greeted Belousov upon his arrival at the airport, with the presence of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan.
The ministerial meeting is set to occur at the Manekshaw Centre later today.
During their discussions, Singh and Belousov aim to assess the extensive relationship between the two nations in defense, particularly focusing on military and technical cooperation. They will also share insights on pressing regional and global matters of shared interest, as noted by the Ministry of Defence.
Defense collaboration stands as a key pillar within the robust friendship and strategic alliance between India and Russia. The two nations adhere to a unique 10-year framework that oversees military and defense technology partnerships. The military-technical cooperation agreement signed on December 6, 2021, in New Delhi, emphasizes joint endeavors in research, manufacturing, and post-sale support for military assets, as per official statements.
This partnership has progressed from a traditional buyer-seller model to one emphasizing joint research, development, and the production of advanced defense technologies and systems. Russia remains a crucial supplier of defense equipment, engines, and components. Various defense platforms such as the T-90 tanks and Su-30 MKI aircraft are also assembled and produced in India.
The two nations are keen on exploring co-development and co-production of defense systems, including potential exports to other countries, exemplified by the BrahMos missile system. Singh's visit to Russia in December 2024 was pivotal as he co-chaired the 21st IRIGC - M&MTC meeting and participated in the commissioning of the frigate “INS Tushil” into the Indian Navy in Kaliningrad.
On July 1, the stealth multi-role frigate INS Tamal was also commissioned in Kaliningrad. The 5th Meeting of the Working Group on Military Cooperation of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military and Military Technical Cooperation took place in New Delhi on October 28-29, 2025.
