Ram Mandir donation case: Somanna invokes Lord Ram; Kharge demands UP probe
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The alleged misappropriation of donations at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya drew sharp political reactions on Saturday, 27 June, with Union Minister of State V. Somanna invoking divine justice and Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge demanding accountability from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
What Somanna Said
Speaking to reporters in Davanagere, Union Minister Somanna — who holds charge of Jal Shakti and Railways — acknowledged the wrongdoing without deflection. 'No matter whoever has done the wrong thing, it is wrong. The Uttar Pradesh government has formed an SIT. It is a sin to have committed such an act in the name of god. Ram will punish those who committed fraud in his name,' he said.
Somanna's remarks are notable given that he is a member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre, making his concession of wrongdoing — however framed in spiritual terms — politically significant.
Kharge's Demands for Transparency
Addressing reporters at his official residence, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge urged Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Adityanath to break their silence on the controversy. 'The public has a right to know how the donations collected for the construction of the Ram Mandir have been utilised. There must be complete transparency in the use of public contributions,' Kharge said.
He called for a comprehensive, impartial investigation and asserted that the Central government bore responsibility for ensuring accountability. 'The Central government must take appropriate steps to uphold the confidence of the people by ensuring accountability and transparency in the handling of public donations,' he added.
Kharge also escalated his allegations, claiming: 'I have stated long ago that BJP indulged in committing fraud. In five years, Rs 500 crore has been looted. I had stated earlier that in the name of Lord Ram, the BJP is committing cheating. There is role of big persons in the case.' The BJP has not publicly responded to these specific figures.
The Donation Case: Background
The controversy centres on alleged discrepancies in the handling of cash and valuables donated by devotees to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. After the Trust itself sought a probe, the Uttar Pradesh government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT). Based on the SIT's preliminary findings, an FIR was registered against eight individuals, including staff responsible for counting and handling donations. The charges include criminal breach of trust and embezzlement.
Amid the fallout, Trust General Secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra reportedly stepped down, citing moral responsibility, even as the formal investigation continues.
Political Fallout and What Comes Next
Opposition parties have seized on the case to demand greater transparency, with some calling for a Supreme Court-monitored investigation. The Uttar Pradesh government has maintained that due legal process is being followed. This comes amid broader scrutiny of temple trust governance across India, where public donations run into thousands of crores annually with limited independent audit mechanisms.
With the SIT probe ongoing and political pressure mounting from both sides of the aisle, the case is likely to intensify ahead of upcoming state political cycles.
