Kolkata, Jan 18 (NationPress) Three alleged illegal Rohingya infiltrators from Myanmar were apprehended at the bustling Sealdah railway station in central Kolkata on Saturday, according to police reports.
The individuals detained include two women and a man, identified as Nur Fatema, Sabu Panekar, and Abdul Rahman. Notably, both women are under 18 years of age.
According to city police sources, officers from the Sealdah Police Station grew suspicious of the trio's behavior within the station area and requested their identification documents.
This led to the revelation of their true identities. All three are related and hail from the Rakhine province in Myanmar.
They had all entered India illegally without the necessary visa and documentation. Prior to this, they had been residing in a refugee camp in Bangladesh.
During questioning, Abdul Rahman confessed that they illegally entered India by paying Rs 20,000 each. He also disclosed that their intended destination was Jammu & Kashmir, where they had acquaintances. He mentioned that they crossed into India through one of the porous borders in West Bengal and arrived at Sealdah station by train on Saturday morning, where they were subsequently detained.
While he has claimed that their journey to Jammu & Kashmir was in search of a livelihood, investigators are not dismissing the possibility of other motives for their arrival in Kolkata, including potential links to terrorism or human trafficking.
The trio will be presented before a local court, where the public prosecutor will seek their police custody.
Meanwhile, investigators are interrogating them to uncover any local contacts who may have facilitated their illegal border crossing into the state.
