New Delhi, March 3 (NationPress) On Tuesday, the Ministry of Defence secured two significant contracts totaling Rs 5,083 crore aimed at bolstering the operational capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy.
The agreements were formalized in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh at the South Block in the capital city.
Among these, a contract valued at Rs 2,901 crore was finalized with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the procurement of six Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Mk-III designated for maritime operations for the Indian Coast Guard.
This contract falls under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category.
These twin-engine helicopters boast cutting-edge technology and surpass the existing platforms in terms of advancement.
They are capable of executing a broad array of maritime security operations both from land-based airfields and naval vessels.
The Ministry of Defence stated, “These twin-engine helicopters feature state-of-the-art capabilities that exceed those of currently deployed airborne assets, enabling them to perform various maritime security missions from both land-based airfields and vessels at sea.”
The introduction of these helicopters is anticipated to greatly enhance the Coast Guard’s effectiveness in safeguarding offshore installations, artificial islands, fishermen, and the marine ecosystem.
This initiative will engage over 200 MSMEs in the supply chain, expected to generate approximately 65 lakh man-hours of employment.
The government emphasized that this contract underscores its dedication to Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the Make in India initiative, while simultaneously enhancing maritime security.
Additionally, a Rs 2,182 crore agreement was established with JSC Rosoboronexport for the acquisition of Surface-to-Air Vertical Launch Shtil missiles and associated equipment for the Indian Navy.
These missiles are set to fortify the air defense capabilities of frontline naval vessels against various aerial threats.
The system will enable rapid response and all-weather operational capability, thereby boosting the survivability of naval forces in challenging maritime conditions.
The government noted that this agreement also reflects the enduring defense collaboration between India and Russia, founded on mutual trust and strategic partnership.
