Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Sunday, 7 June addressed a public gathering in Dhuri — the Assembly constituency of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann — and declared that the enthusiasm of local residents signalled a strong wave of political change across Punjab. Saini used the rally to mount a sharp critique of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, contrasting its record with what he described as Haryana's model of transparent governance.

Saini's Attack on AAP Governance

Targeting Bhagwant Mann directly, Saini said the Punjab Chief Minister 'knows little beyond cracking jokes,' adding, 'Jokes can run cinema halls, but they cannot run governments.' He argued that AAP leaders project themselves as revolutionaries while concealing their own shortcomings by misrepresenting the work of others.

Saini said Dhuri itself was evidence of the Chief Minister's neglect — a constituency Mann has 'distanced himself from,' according to Saini. He contended that Punjab, once among India's more developed states, has slipped into the category of laggards under successive governments that prioritised narrow political interests over public welfare.

Drug Menace and Farmer Distress

Saini alleged that the fight against drugs in Punjab is being waged primarily through newspaper advertisements rather than ground-level action. He also accused the AAP government of betraying farmers who backed the party in the 2022 Assembly elections, pointing out that neither have all crops received the benefit of Minimum Support Price (MSP), nor are farmers being adequately compensated for crop losses.

'This is the biggest betrayal of farmers,' Saini said, asserting that they would deliver their verdict in the coming elections.

Haryana's Record as a Counterpoint

Saini held up Haryana as a contrast, claiming it is the first state in the country where the government procures all farmers' crops at MSP. He said that following crop damage from rains and floods last year, Haryana provided financial assistance of ₹16,500 crore to affected farmers. He added that farmers bringing produce to mandis receive their J-Forms online immediately and payment is credited to their accounts within 72 hours.

He further stated that the 'double-engine' government — referring to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) being in power in both Haryana and at the Centre — has delivered measurable improvements over the past eleven and a half years through welfare scheme delivery without discrimination.

BJP's Pitch and What Comes Next

Saini invoked Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Central government schemes for farmers, youth, women, and marginalised communities, framing the BJP as a party that implements rather than merely promises. He warned that many industries in Punjab are on the verge of closure, positioning the BJP as the alternative for economic revival.

The rally in Dhuri is part of a broader BJP push into Punjab ahead of the next state elections, with the party seeking to convert anti-incumbency against AAP into electoral ground. Whether Saini's campaign trail in Mann's home turf translates into votes will be a key indicator of the BJP's Punjab strategy.
