New Delhi, Sep 25 (NationPress) Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, officially inaugurated India’s inaugural fleet of electric heavy trucks equipped with swappable batteries at the Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Navi Mumbai.
This milestone establishes JNPA as home to the most extensive EV truck fleet among all Indian ports, advancing sustainable logistics.
A heavy-duty battery swapping station was also set up. JNPA plans to transition 90 percent of its internal heavy truck fleet, comprising about 600 vehicles, by December 2026, as per an official statement.
“Today marks a significant move towards electrifying our logistics vehicle fleet, sending a message that India’s ports are prepared to welcome the future and set standards for sustainability, efficiency, and innovation,” stated Sonowal.
Indian ports are increasingly adopting solar and wind energy initiatives, LNG and hydrogen fuel infrastructure, along with the electrification of cargo handling equipment.
“Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are committed to ensuring that the Indian maritime sector not only keeps pace with global advancements but also establishes new standards in sustainability and efficiency,” Sonowal added.
The introduction of these cutting-edge EV trucks is another significant step in JNPA’s commitment to decarbonisation and energy transition within the maritime and logistics sector.
This initiative reflects the Authority’s resolve to align with global sustainability goals while enhancing operational efficiency and minimizing carbon emissions across cargo transportation routes.
A total of 50 trucks were inaugurated today, with the fleet projected to grow to 80 by year’s end.
“Recently, JNPA has garnered attention for its achievements — from ranking among the Top 25 Ports globally in the World Bank’s CPPI index, setting records in container handling, to advancing essential projects in the SEZ, digitalisation, and green energy. Today’s event adds another feather to that cap,” Sonowal noted.
Unmesh Sharad Wagh, Chairperson of JNPA, remarked, “The introduction of this new fleet of EV trucks signifies not just an enhancement of our logistical capabilities but a transformative leap towards a cleaner, greener, and more resilient future for port operations.”
