Alappuzha (Kerala), Dec 4 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in Kerala, V.D. Satheesan, expressed robust support for the Congress party's prompt response regarding the sexual assault allegations against first-time MLA Rahul Mamkootathil. He emphasized that the party acted "more swiftly and decisively than any political entity in the nation".
While addressing the media in Alappuzha, Satheesan revealed that the Congress made a unanimous decision to suspend Mamkootathil even before receiving a formal complaint.
He noted that the leadership reached an agreement immediately after the voice recording emerged, and once a second complaint was directed to the state party chief, the party acted decisively to expel the MLA.
"Today’s announcement is simply the official confirmation of a prior decision. Whether it was declared yesterday or today is inconsequential," he stated.
"I take pride in my party. When faced with such a grave accusation, we did not shield the alleged perpetrator or attempt to protect him. We directly forwarded the complaint to the police," he continued.
Satheesan contrasted this prompt action with the Left government's approach regarding complaints against its own leaders.
He alleged that numerous petitions at the AKG Centre (CPI-M state headquarters) and the Chief Minister’s Office are "collecting dust".
According to Satheesan, the Congress’s proactive stance should encourage the CPI-M to refer long-standing complaints to the police. Reacting to critiques regarding the timing of Mamkootathil's expulsion before his resignation, he stated that resignation is a personal choice.
"No political party in the country has acted as quickly in a comparable situation," he claimed.
He condemned sections of the media for "distracting from the gravity of the case by emphasizing procedural matters".
Satheesan also directly criticized the CPI-M for alleged hypocrisy.
"In the CPI-M, an MLA accused of rape still holds a seat in the Assembly. Has anyone questioned the Chief Minister about this?" he asked.
He noted that some leaders accused by women in Alappuzha were removed from their positions only to be renominated for the current election.
The Opposition leader accused the ruling front of attempting to keep the Mamkootathil case "in the spotlight until the election" to divert attention from pressing matters such as the Sabarimala gold-smuggling scandal and escalating public discontent with the government.
He insinuated that the Chief Minister’s Office was aware of the impending complaint.
"If they intended to arrest him, a single police officer could have accomplished it. Their motive was not justice but political advantage," he asserted.
Satheesan defined the Congress’s actions as "a benchmark for all political parties," challenging the CPI-M to now submit their complaints to the police and permit appropriate action.
