Imphal, Nov 13 (NationPress) In a decisive operation, security forces have eradicated approximately 25 acres of illegal poppy cultivation in the mountainous region of Kangpokpi district, thwarting an attempt to manufacture opium valued in crores, officials confirmed on Thursday.
A spokesperson from the defense reported that the operation was initiated based on specific intelligence regarding extensive illicit poppy farming. The Assam Rifles, in collaboration with CRPF and Manipur Police, carried out the operation in the hilly Awlmun area of Kangpokpi district.
The vigorous action began on Wednesday morning and extended into the late evening. Throughout this extensive endeavor, the joint security team dismantled about 25 acres of illegal poppy fields, along with eight huts used for processing and storage.
The destroyed plantations were estimated to yield around 190 kilograms of opium, potentially worth several crores, the spokesperson noted.
The operation was executed under challenging terrain and adverse weather, highlighting the Assam Rifles' commitment to combat narcotics trafficking and dismantle financial networks that facilitate insurgent and anti-national activities.
Previously, on November 2, the Assam Rifles and other forces also eradicated illegal poppy fields spanning 30 acres in the same Kangchup district. Additionally, three huts, three bags of fertilizer, and two sacks of salt were destroyed, with two burnt Gypsy vehicles discovered at the site.
A senior state government official stated that as part of the Manipur government’s “War against drugs,” various security forces, including the Assam Rifles and Manipur police, have consistently eradicated hundreds of acres of illegal poppy cultivation on governmental and forest lands over the years.
In 2020, security forces and government agencies identified a staggering 8057 acres of poppy fields, of which 1695 acres were destroyed. This rigorous action has continued in the following years.
By 2024 and 2025, the identified area of poppy fields had significantly diminished, reflecting the success of both state and central governments and the security forces' multi-pronged strategy, the official highlighted.
