New Delhi, Dec 7 (NationPress) In the midst of a political uproar regarding the guest list for the state banquet held for Russian President Vladimir Putin at Rashtrapati Bhavan, BJP state President and Minister Dilip Jaiswal sharply criticized Congress leadership, highlighting the diplomatic qualifications of MP Shashi Tharoor in contrast to those of Lok Sabha's Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi.
In response to Congress's allegations about selective invitations, Jaiswal asserted that Tharoor's presence was justified due to his extensive professional experience and global expertise. “Shashi Tharoor is a skilled diplomat and a person of vast knowledge. In contrast, Rahul Gandhi often criticizes the nation despite benefiting from it. Individuals like him do not belong in diplomatic circles,” he remarked to IANS.
Jaiswal intensified his critique, targeting Gandhi's recent statements implying that the Modi administration breached tradition by excluding Opposition leaders from engaging with the visiting Russian President.
He described Gandhi's assertions as politically motivated and disconnected from reality. “Rahul Gandhi must recognize that the Constitution is not under threat; rather, it is his Congress party that faces peril. The Congress ship is sinking, and Gandhi should prioritize salvaging his party. India’s democracy and constitutional system are robust, so instead of creating a spectacle, he should concentrate on his own party...” the BJP leader stated.
The controversy ignited after it was revealed that Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, Leaders of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, respectively, were excluded from the official banquet on Friday evening. Conversely, senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, a former diplomat and ex-UN Under-Secretary-General, received an invitation and attended the event.
This incident followed closely on the heels of Rahul Gandhi's public accusation that the Modi government breached “tradition” and displayed “insecurity” by barring him and other Opposition figures from meeting President Vladimir Putin.
Putin's visit to India, lasting two days, aimed at discussing defense cooperation, energy relations, and regional security with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The political discourse surrounding the guest list has overshadowed the diplomatic engagement, with the ruling BJP asserting that the government’s institutional processes are intact and accusing Congress of trying to manufacture controversy.
