New Delhi, July 19 (NationPress) The recent decision by the United States to classify The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), as a global terrorist organization has received positive feedback from Shashi Tharoor, a former diplomat and prominent Congress leader. The MP from Thiruvananthapuram expressed optimism on Saturday that this action would elevate international pressure on Pakistan to combat terrorist groups operating from its territory.
This designation follows a strong call for action by US President Donald Trump in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals.
Using the social media platform X, Tharoor stated, “I welcome the US @StateDept’s designation of TheResistanceFront, the Lashkar proxy that claimed responsibility for #Pahalgam, as a terrorist organization, intensifying pressure on Pakistan to limit its activities and bring it under control.”
In another post, Tharoor shared insights from his recent discussions in Washington.
“During my private talks in Washington, I bluntly inquired why the US continues to permit Pakistan to shelter terrorist organizations. I was informed about Pakistan's supposed cooperation with the US on counter-terrorism efforts, particularly regarding the recent surrender of the individual believed to be responsible for the Abbey Gate bombing that killed 23 US Marines at Kabul Airport,” the Congress MP noted.
Stressing the necessity for consistent global action, Tharoor commented, “Our doubts regarding the effectiveness and sincerity of Pakistani actions against terrorism are shaped by our experiences with terrorist groups directed against us, rather than those whom the US regards as hostile, such as ISIS–Khorasan. This step is pivotal in reconciling the differences in perceptions between the US and India on this matter, aiding our efforts to classify TRF at the @UN as well.”
The TRF had taken responsibility for the Pahalgam assault, the deadliest terrorist incident targeting Indian civilians since the 2008 Mumbai attacks. In the wake of this tragedy, US President Trump personally contacted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend condolences and affirm unwavering US support in ensuring justice for the perpetrators.
On Thursday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio officially announced the addition of TRF to the list of designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs).
“This action underscores the Trump Administration’s commitment to safeguarding our national security interests, countering terrorism, and fulfilling President Trump’s call for justice regarding the Pahalgam attack,” Rubio remarked.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar raised this issue during recent discussions with Rubio and at the Quad foreign ministers' meeting in Washington, emphasizing India's demand for coordinated global efforts against terror proxies like TRF.
Additionally, an all-party parliamentary delegation led by Shashi Tharoor visited Washington last month to inform US lawmakers and officials about the role of TRF and Pakistan’s ongoing support for terror infrastructure. This designation is celebrated as a significant milestone in India-US counter-terrorism collaboration and a crucial step towards holding state sponsors of terrorism accountable.
