Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday, 25 June kicked off a two-day official visit to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with a schedule spanning education, heritage conservation, and community outreach. Sitharaman arrived in Chennai from New Delhi on Wednesday evening and was received at the airport by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and party workers.

Book Launch in Kanchipuram

The first major engagement of the day was the release of 'Daughters of Kanchi – The SSKV Story' at the SSKV College of Arts and Science for Women in Kanchipuram. The publication documents the history and contributions of the institution, with a focus on its decades-long role in advancing women's education and empowerment in the region.

Sitharaman also engaged with students, academicians, and members of the local community as part of outreach initiatives in Kanchipuram district. Notably, Kanchipuram holds particular personal and political significance for the Finance Minister, who has consistently used national platforms to spotlight the district's celebrated handloom tradition. During her most recent Union Budget presentation, she drew wide attention by wearing a handwoven deep magenta-maroon Kanjeevaram silk saree featuring intricate gold zari work — a gesture widely interpreted as a tribute to the town's weaving community.

Lighthouse Inauguration in Puducherry

Later on Thursday, Sitharaman travelled to Puducherry, where she inaugurated the renovated historic lighthouse on the campus of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Commissionerate at 5.30 pm. The restoration is aimed at preserving a colonial-era landmark and enhancing its heritage value for the territory.

400-Year-Old Muzhiankulam to Be Restored on Friday

On Friday, 27 June, the Finance Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the restored 400-year-old Muzhiankulam at a government middle school in Puducherry. The project is part of a broader initiative to conserve heritage structures while simultaneously upgrading community infrastructure and public spaces.

The two-day itinerary reflects the Centre's stated emphasis on educational development, cultural preservation, and public engagement through locally rooted projects.
