Karur, Sep 29 (NationPress) “Such tragedies must never recur,” stated Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday during her visit to Karur, Tamil Nadu, the site of a devastating stampede at actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally, which resulted in 41 fatalities on Saturday night.
Sitharaman inspected the accident location at Velayuthampalayam and interacted with the injured at local hospitals before speaking to the press.
She emphasized that her visit was solely to support and comfort the victims and their families, representing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union government.
“The Prime Minister has conveyed his profound sorrow regarding this calamity. I will report my observations to Home Minister Amit Shah,” she informed the media.
She declared that each grieving family would receive ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) as soon as the district administration provides the necessary banking information.
“Numerous families are devastated; some even arrived with young children lacking food or water,” she remarked, describing the event as “unimaginably painful.”
The Finance Minister mentioned that medical personnel assured her that the injured were receiving adequate care. She highlighted the need for enhanced safety measures and the establishment of clear Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to prevent such tragedies from occurring again.
However, she declined to engage in political discussions.
“My visit serves a specific purpose — to convey the Prime Minister’s message and provide necessary assistance. I prefer not to involve myself in political disputes,” she stated.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who promptly visited the area post-tragedy and oversaw relief efforts, reiterated that the Tamil Nadu government would formulate new regulations for political gatherings following the completion of the inquiry by the Justice Aruna Jagadeesan Commission.
“Our actions will be guided by the commission’s conclusions,” CM Stalin remarked, urging caution against the spread of unverified information.
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami expressed condolences to the bereaved families, emphasizing the urgent requirement for improved crowd control.
TVK leader Vijay, visibly affected by the incident, described the fatalities as “heart-wrenching” and pledged ₹20 lakh compensation for each family, along with ₹2 lakh for each injured individual.
The stampede occurred when a large crowd surged forward to catch a glimpse of Vijay after his speech, causing panic and disorder. Over 60 individuals were injured, with several in critical condition. This tragedy has sparked sorrow and discussions regarding public safety at political events in Tamil Nadu.
