Imphal, Nov 23 (NationPress) In a significant display of support for the burgeoning talents of Manipuri cinema, the Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) has spearheaded an initiative to create a robust support network for novice filmmakers, successfully raising Rs 2.27 lakh through a dedicated fundraising screening of 'Oitharei' on Sunday.
With the goal of fostering cinematic growth and empowering new voices, MSFDS, a project of the Manipur government, organized the event to provide assistance to the crew members of two Manipuri films that have been chosen for the Indian Panorama section of the ongoing 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) Goa 2025, an accolade that stands as one of the highest recognitions in Indian cinema.
MSFDS Secretary Sunzu Bachaspatimayum noted that this year is particularly remarkable, as two Manipuri films—a documentary and a fiction feature—have been selected among the finest in Indian cinema.
Battlefield, directed by Borun Thokchom, is a comprehensive documentary that reveals the lesser-known history of the pivotal Battle of Imphal, fought in Manipur between Japan and Allied forces during World War II.
'Oitharei', on the other hand, is a fictional narrative that delves into the sorrow, loss, and despair experienced by the populace amidst the ongoing ethnic strife in Manipur.
While the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is funding travel and accommodation for two to three core crew members from each film, many first-time participants are eager to attend the IFFI for valuable exposure and professional development, according to Bachaspatimayum.
He further emphasized that MSFDS recognizes the vital role of festival participation in shaping artistic careers and resolved to offer support even without specific funds allocated for this purpose.
Every year, MSFDS sets aside Rs 1 lakh to partially sponsor delegates, particularly those involved in the film industry, including critics and journalists.
The fundraising screening effectively closed the financial gap, with the Chief Electoral Office of Manipur contributing an impressive Rs 1.5 lakh to the effort.
In exchange, MSFDS will provide a month-long platform for electoral awareness materials and screen promotional films featuring electoral messages before and during film showings at the auditorium.
Although modest in scale, this initiative showcases a burgeoning ecosystem of support for the film community in the region, particularly during a period marked by significant constraints on government funding.
More importantly, it conveys a collective understanding that exposure, networking, and educational opportunities at festivals are just as crucial as the filmmaking process itself in cultivating successful creative futures.
“By transforming communal goodwill into a foundation for new filmmakers, MSFDS is quietly establishing a framework for long-term mentorship, collaboration, and cultural affirmation, ensuring that Manipuri cinema flourishes not only on-screen but in its essence,” stated Bachaspatimayum.
Meanwhile, the 56th IFFI-2025 commenced in Goa on November 20, showcasing over 240 films from 81 countries throughout the nine-day festival.
