Srinagar, March 7 (NationPress) The famous tulip garden of Srinagar, located on the shores of Dal Lake and nestled at the base of the Zabarwan mountain, is set to open its gates to tourists by the end of this month.

This garden is celebrated for its stunning array of tulips and various other spring blossoms, crafted by the local floriculture department to ensure a blooming season that lasts nearly a month. Tulips, which are generally short-lived, have been arranged in a precise pattern to prolong their vibrant display.

Every year, fresh enhancements are made to increase the garden's allure. “This year, we have introduced a new color palette and added two new tulip varieties, bringing the total to 74,” remarked Asif Ahmad, Assistant Floriculture Officer.

Along with tulips, other spring flowers like hyacinths, daffodils, muscari, and cyclamens will also be showcased, creating a diverse floral spectacle.

Spanning over 55 hectares, the garden is home to around 1.7 million tulip bulbs this season. “The expansion of the garden is nearing full capacity, and we are excited to welcome visitors to see the blooms,” Ahmad noted.

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden was inaugurated in 2007 by then Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to extend the tourist season in Jammu and Kashmir beyond just summer and winter. What started with 50,000 tulip bulbs imported from the Netherlands has transformed into Asia's largest tulip garden, drawing tourists from around the globe.

Last year, the garden received over 465,000 visitors, surpassing the 365,000 recorded in 2023. Officials are optimistic for an even greater turnout this year.

“Despite the brief blooming period of 25 to 30 days last season, we witnessed a record number of visitors. We invite people from all over India and beyond to experience this floral extravaganza,” Ahmad stated.

Previously known as Siraj Bagh, the garden was considerably smaller before its evolution into the current tulip haven.
