New Delhi, July 2 (NationPress) Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced on Wednesday that all necessary due diligence has been finalized for the launch of SpaceX’s Starlink service in India. He stated that as soon as they obtain the required regulatory and licensing approvals from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe), the service can be initiated at their discretion.
During an interview with IANS in the national capital, Minister Scindia confirmed that his ministry has completed all processes needed for the introduction of this affordable satellite-based service. The next step relies on Starlink acquiring the necessary endorsements from IN-SPACe, which is the regulatory authority for space in India.
“The next move is in Starlink’s hands to commence services in India following the receipt of those approvals,” Scindia stated.
SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service is on the verge of going operational in India, with expectations that it will begin offering services within the next two months.
IN-SPACe Chairman Dr. Pawan Goenka has confirmed that most regulatory and licensing obligations for Starlink have been met.
Established in June 2020 in response to the government's decision to liberalize the space industry and encourage the involvement of Indian private entities, IN-SPACe serves as an independent, single-window agency functioning autonomously under the Department of Space (DOS).
The space regulator has already issued a draft letter of intent (LOI) to Starlink. Upon signing this document by both parties, Starlink will receive official clearance to launch its services in the Indian market.
Starlink provides internet access via a network of satellites orbiting the Earth, boasting the world’s largest satellite constellation with over 6,750 satellites currently in orbit.
The company asserts that Starlink offers rapid internet with minimal latency, making it ideal for remote locations with limited connectivity. In Asia, Starlink services are already operational in various countries, including Mongolia, Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Jordan, Yemen, Azerbaijan, and now Sri Lanka.
Globally, the service reaches users in over 100 countries and offers both residential and roaming internet plans.
Residential plans come in two tiers: Residential Lite for smaller households with limited data needs, and Residential for larger families or heavier internet usage.
