Hyderabad, Oct 26 (NationPress) In the upcoming Jubilee Hills Assembly bye-election, candidates have selected an array of election symbols ranging from fruits to kitchen utensils, and from household items to electrical and electronic goods.
The bye-election, scheduled for November 11, features 58 candidates competing for the Assembly constituency in Hyderabad.
On Sunday, the Election Commission released the list of candidates and their respective election symbols.
Notably, contestants from smaller parties and independent candidates have chosen some unique symbols, including soap dishes, baby walkers, dumbbells, dishes, room coolers, CCTV cameras, baskets of fruits, bangles, and dresses.
Alongside members from three recognized national and state political parties, this election sees 26 contestants from minor parties and 29 independents.
This marks the highest number of candidates ever in the Jubilee Hills constituency, created in 2009 during the Assembly segment adjustments.
The total number of contenders could have been higher, but 130 nominations were rejected, and another 23 candidates withdrew their nominations.
Numerous candidates have joined the race to voice their concerns on various issues, including individuals reportedly affected by housing demolitions by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), the realignment of the proposed Regional Ring Road (RRR), farmers, and unemployed youth.
According to the final electoral rolls released recently, the constituency boasts 401,365 voters, comprising 208,561 men and 192,779 women. Furthermore, 2,383 new voters were registered after the election notification.
Due to the involvement of 58 candidates, each polling booth will utilize four ballot units, necessitating extensive voting compartments.
District Election Officer R.V. Karnan stated that all preparations for 407 polling stations have been finalized.
The bye-election is anticipated to be a triangular contest among the Congress, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The bye-election was necessitated by the passing of BRS leader Maganti Gopinath, who previously held the Jubilee Hills seat for the third consecutive term in 2023. The BRS has nominated his wife, Maganti Sunitha.
The Congress party has endorsed Naveen Yadav, while the BJP has once again selected Lankala Deepak Reddy.
In the previous elections, Gopinath defeated former Indian cricket captain and Congress candidate Mohammed Azharuddin by 16,337 votes. Gopinath received 80,549 votes, while Azharuddin garnered 64,212 votes, with Deepak Reddy of the BJP trailing in third with 25,866 votes.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), whose candidate finished fourth in the 2023 elections, is not contesting this time and has expressed support for the Congress candidate.
