Chennai, Oct 14 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has commenced its four-day winter session, which began on Tuesday amidst a highly charged political environment.
Presiding over the proceedings was Speaker M. Appavu, who initiated the session with the traditional recital of Thirukkural. The atmosphere was somber as the assembly paid tribute to eight former members who have recently passed away. Following this, there was a two-minute silence in memory of the 41 victims of the unfortunate Karur stampede that took place during a political rally on September 27.
The Assembly members also adopted condolence resolutions for notable figures such as former Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren, former Nagaland Governor L. Ganesan, CPI general secretary Sudhakar Reddy, and IAS officer Dr Beela Venkatesan. Their invaluable contributions to public life were honored with great respect by the members in attendance.
A unique condolence resolution was passed for D.K. Amul Kandasamy, the AIADMK MLA from Valparai, who also recently passed away.
In a mark of respect, members from all parties stood in silence. Following the completion of the condolence proceedings, Speaker Appavu adjourned the House for the day, with plans for the session to resume on Wednesday.
As per the agenda, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu is set to present the supplementary estimates for the fiscal year 2025-2026 on October 15.
On October 16, discussions regarding the grants will take place, with the minister responding to the debates on October 17, thereby concluding this brief session.
Each day's proceedings are scheduled to commence at 9:30 a.m. with the Question Hour, followed by legislative business.
Although the winter session is short, it is anticipated to witness intense debates between the Treasury and Opposition benches, particularly in light of the recent Karur tragedy and ongoing law-and-order issues that have affected the state.
The Speaker has expressed optimism that the proceedings will be both dignified and constructive, focusing on the welfare of the people despite political disagreements.
