Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is preparing for a high-stakes visit to New Delhi, one that marks a significant shift from his earlier appearances in the capital — this time arriving not as a party figure under scrutiny, but as the head of a state government with a dual agenda of political engagement and financial negotiations.

Key Meetings on the Agenda

According to sources, Vijay is expected to hold meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and senior Indian National Congress (INC) leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. A formal appointment request has reportedly been submitted to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), though a confirmed date is yet to be finalised, given the Prime Minister's existing official and party commitments. Officials said Vijay is expected to travel to Delhi immediately upon receiving confirmation.

A Departure from His Earlier Delhi Visits

Vijay's previous visits to the national capital carried a markedly different character. He appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on 12 January and 19 January in connection with a probe into a stampede at a public meeting held in Karur on 27 September last year, in which 41 people lost their lives. That visit was made in his capacity as a party leader. This upcoming trip, by contrast, is squarely focused on governance and state interests.

Tamil Nadu's Economic Pressures Drive the Agenda

A significant portion of the visit is expected to centre on Tamil Nadu's fiscal challenges. Sources indicate that Vijay recently held internal discussions with senior finance officials to assess the state's financial position and explore avenues for relief. Officials reportedly advised the Chief Minister that engaging with the Union government to secure greater financial support represents the most practical near-term solution. Vijay is said to have explored whether the state could independently generate additional funds, but finance officials pointed out that immediate alternatives were limited, particularly as preparations for the 2026-27 state budget were already underway.

Demands Being Prepared for PMO Meeting

Officials are now believed to be compiling a detailed list of financial demands and proposals to be presented during the Chief Minister's meeting with the Prime Minister. The package is expected to address fiscal pressures described as inherited from previous administrative challenges. Separately, political sources suggest that Vijay has already spoken with Rahul Gandhi by phone regarding the proposed visit, signalling that the outreach to the Congress leadership is well underway even before the trip begins.
