Chennai, May 14 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu's pioneering integrated housing initiative designed specifically for the differently-abled community is set to be inaugurated in Coimbatore in less than a month.
Situated in Orattukuppai, the project is nearing completion, as reported by official sources.
The Coimbatore Collector, Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar, shared that the district administration is also rolling out a livelihood program for beneficiaries, allowing them to generate income from their residences.
This initiative is aimed at fostering self-sufficiency among individuals living with disabilities.
In 2023, the Tamil Nadu government allocated land at no cost to 113 eligible candidates, out of which 86 were selected for this housing project.
Construction started in 2024 on a 3.98-acre plot, and the project is now finished. Each of the 86 one-bedroom units was built at a cost of Rs 6.60 lakh.
The overall construction expenditure amounts to Rs 5.59 crore, with Rs 1.8 crore funded by the government and Rs 3.68 crore from a charitable organization. An additional Rs 1.31 crore was allocated for vital infrastructure like water supply, drainage, overhead tanks, internal roads, and street lighting.
Accessibility was a key focus, with 16 homes equipped with differently-abled-friendly toilets designed specifically for individuals with spinal cord injuries.
Furthermore, the district administration intends to offer entrepreneurship training as part of the Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihoods Mission, known popularly as Magalir Thittam.
Project Director R. Madhura noted that many beneficiaries and their families already have tailoring skills.
"We aim to enhance their abilities further and assist them in creating marketable products," he mentioned.
He indicated that there is a continual demand for tailoring services within the garment industry. Once trained, beneficiaries could establish a production cluster, with the administration facilitating marketing opportunities, particularly in Erode, to help them secure a stable income.
