Five Individuals Detained Following Tragic Death of Arup Bandopadhyay in Kolkata Hospital Elevator Incident
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 20 (NationPress) The officials from the Tala police station under Kolkata Police took five individuals into custody on Friday for inquiries regarding the tragic death of Arup Bandopadhyay, who became trapped in an elevator at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata for over an hour.
Following a general diary lodged by Amal Bandopadhyay, the deceased's father, police filed a First Information Report (FIR) citing culpable homicide.
The initial post-mortem findings revealed severe injuries, including fractures in the ribs, hands, and legs, alongside damage to the lungs, heart, and liver.
On Friday morning, Amal Bandopadhyay visited the hospital to check on his minor son, who was admitted to the trauma care unit.
Tragically, Arup was found deceased after being trapped in the elevator at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he was stuck for more than an hour before his body was retrieved.
There are allegations that no elevator operator was present during the incident, which occurred while Arup was trapped in the elevator, which had stalled midway. During that time, hospital staff were reportedly unavailable to assist in reactivating the elevator.
Saptarshi Chattopadhyay, the Medical Superintendent of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, confirmed to reporters that the complaint filed by Arup's father has been forwarded to the Tala police station.
"The family of the deceased claims he was injured while trapped in the elevator. Although the elevator appeared to be functioning, they panicked when it began to ascend and descend. The elevator landed at a point, and three individuals trapped inside attempted to exit. However, a collapsible gate barred their way. At that moment, as the deceased tried to exit, the elevator resumed moving upwards, causing him to become wedged between the elevator and the wall. These are the assertions made by the family members of the deceased," Chattopadhyay stated.
He acknowledged that the lack of an elevator operator or any supporting staff constituted an administrative oversight.
The R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital has previously garnered national attention due to the rape and murder of a female doctor on its premises in August 2024.
Additionally, an investigation was initiated into significant financial irregularities at the hospital, with widespread speculation that the heinous rape incident occurred because the victim uncovered these financial discrepancies.
Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been accused of orchestrating the financial irregularities and is currently detained by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
