Agartala, April 22 (NationPress) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, for the first time, has publicly addressed the construction of embankments by the Bangladesh government along the state's borders, stating that these issues have been communicated to the Centre.
The Bangladesh government is constructing embankments opposite to Tripura's Unakoti and South Tripura districts, raising concerns as these structures may threaten the towns of Kailashahar and Belonia, along with nearby villages during the monsoon flooding.
While addressing the media during the inauguration of a school building at Amtali in Agartala, the Chief Minister affirmed that the government is taking these matters seriously.
He mentioned that for the Unakoti district, necessary measures have already been initiated. Regarding the embankment situation in South Tripura, he confirmed that detailed information has been compiled and sent to the Centre for appropriate action.
The Chief Minister also noted that the state is actively constructing embankments in vulnerable regions and expressed optimism that residents will not face further difficulties due to the developments across the border.
Additionally, Tripura Public Works Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, along with senior officials, conducted on-site evaluations in both Unakoti and South Tripura districts. He reported that the state has initiated the construction of new embankments and the repair of existing ones at a cost of Rs 150 crore.
Gitte assured that most of the works would be completed before the onset of the monsoon, indicating that the PWD, Water Resource Development departments, and disaster management authorities are prepared to handle any emergencies during the monsoon period from June to September.
To safeguard the headquarters of South Tripura, Belonia and Unakoti, as well as neighboring villages, embankments and other protective measures are being implemented, with ongoing efforts expected to increase.
Following last year’s devastating floods and landslides, which damaged numerous river embankments along the India-Bangladesh border, the government has identified 43 locations in various districts including South Tripura for infrastructure repairs, which have either begun or will commence shortly.
CPI-M MLA Dipankar Sen and Congress MLA and former minister Birajit Sinha have urged the state government to escalate the embankment issues to the Union government for necessary action. Sinha has also organized a series of protests in Kailashahar, the district headquarters of Unakoti, seeking intervention from the Central government.
