Agartala, Sep 30 (NationPress) According to officials, under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), Tripura achieved an impressive average of 60 mandays per labour card holder during the last financial year, surpassing the national average of 50 days.
A senior representative from the Rural Development Department revealed that for the financial year 2024-25, the Central government had set an allocation of three crore mandays (person-days), but the state government remarkably generated 3.53 crore mandays.
In the previous fiscal year 2024-25, Tripura secured the seventh position among all states and Union Territories in terms of mandays generation.
The official further noted that for the ongoing financial year 2025-26, the Union government has earmarked 3.5 crore mandays, with potential for increase through discussions with the Union Ministry of Rural Development.
As of September 29 this year, over 1.71 crore mandays have already been generated, with each labour card holder receiving an average of 31 mandays based on their demand.
During this timeframe, Tripura's government received Rs 548.18 crore from the Centre and disbursed Rs 505.83 crore as wages.
The official emphasized that there is no financial crisis affecting the state’s implementation of MGNREGA.
Referencing reports from the Union government, he mentioned that policy changes regarding the execution of MGNREGA have led to substantial progress in rural development and water conservation within the national scheme over the past 11 years (since 2014).
From 2014 to 2025, MGNREGA has evolved into the world's largest social welfare programme, with an expenditure of approximately Rs 8.4 lakh crore and the creation of over 3,000 crore person-days of employment nationwide.
Notably, women's participation has increased from 48 percent in 2014 to 58 percent in 2025.
Under this scheme, over 1.25 crore water conservation assets such as farm ponds, check dams, and community tanks have been established across the nation.
These initiatives have produced significant results, leading to a reduction in the number of water-stressed rural blocks.
Additionally, under 'Mission Amrit Sarovar', more than 68,000 reservoirs have been built or rejuvenated in the first phase across the country.
