Tripura Sees Higher Registration of New Women Voters Compared to Men: Officials

Agartala, Jan 6 (NationPress) The number of new women voters registered in Tripura stands at 2,166, exceeding that of new male voters. This change has contributed to an improved gender ratio in the final electoral rolls, which is now 993, an increase from 991 in the draft electoral rolls, as reported by officials on Monday.

Following the guidelines from the Election Commission, the final photo electoral rolls for all 60 Assembly constituencies in Tripura were published on Monday after a special summary revision lasting over two months, with January 1, 2025, designated as the qualifying date.

An election official noted that Tripura’s gender ratio of 993 is significantly higher than the national average of 948.

The national gender ratio in the electoral rolls improved from 940 in 2023 to 948 in 2024, according to the official. Furthermore, the elector-population ratio in Tripura rose to 681 in the final electoral rolls, compared to 675 in the draft rolls published on October 29 last year.

In the draft electoral rolls, the total number of voters was 28,64,475. The final rolls recorded an increase to 28,91,082 electors, with 14,50,709 being male, 14,40,229 female, and 74 from the third gender category.

The total number of fresh inclusions in the electoral rolls is 51,303, with 30,399 electors added in the 18-19 age group, including 14,766 males, 15,632 females, and one from the third gender.

Additionally, 12,430 deceased voters have been removed from the electoral rolls. The net increase in voters compared to the draft rolls is 26,607, comprising 12,218 male voters, 14,384 female voters, and 5 from the third gender.

During the special summary revision, the Election Commission also launched a comprehensive voter awareness campaign under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) initiative to maximize the enrollment of eligible voters.

Eligible voters among the displaced Reang tribals, locally referred to as Bru, who migrated from Mizoram to Tripura between 1997 and 2009 due to ethnic conflicts in the neighboring state, have also been included in Tripura's electoral rolls.

After years of conflicts and protests, a quadripartite agreement was signed on January 16, 2020, involving the Centre, the Tripura and Mizoram governments, and the Reang tribal leaders to resettle 37,584 tribal immigrants, comprising 6,935 families, across 12 locations in four of Tripura's eight districts.
