Chennai, May 14 (NationPress) The President of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay, expressed his discontent with the ruling DMK government in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, criticizing its lack of action and silence regarding the controversial Waqf Amendment Act.

His statements were made just before a significant Supreme Court hearing, where TVK has been seeking legal remedies. In a pointed remark, Vijay questioned, “While the Kerala government took a stand against the CAA and pursued legal action in the Supreme Court, why has the DMK government failed to demonstrate the same determination concerning the Waqf Amendment?”

He highlighted that although the DMK has publicly opposed the legislation in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, it has not yet taken any formal steps to engage in the legal battle or start other legal actions against the act.

Vijay’s remarks came in light of recent decisions from the Supreme Court, where a bench led by former Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna granted interim relief by halting crucial provisions of the amended Act. The court mandated that no actions be taken on properties already recorded as Waqf or those acknowledged through continuous religious use (Waqf by user).

It also prohibited District Collectors from commencing new proceedings under the amended provisions. Vijay stated that TVK was among the first to contest the Act, expressing concern over its implications for minority rights and constitutional safeguards. The party’s petition, represented by senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, argued that the amendments breached several constitutional articles, including Articles 14, 15, 19, 25, 26, and 29.

Describing the interim stay as a “noteworthy legal success for democratic forces,” Vijay divulged that TVK had filed a rejoinder countering the Centre’s affidavit, raising additional constitutional issues. With the next hearing scheduled for May 15, Vijay reaffirmed his party’s dedication to repealing the Act.

“This is not merely a symbolic protest. We are resolute in our efforts to see this legislation withdrawn. We call upon the DMK government to fulfill its ethical and constitutional responsibilities by joining this legal struggle to safeguard minority rights and uphold the Constitution,” he asserted.
