The National Testing Agency (NTA) is conducting the UGC NET June 2026 re-examination for English and Commerce on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, at designated centres across India, following confirmed question paper errors in those subjects. The Sociology re-examination is scheduled for Thursday, 10 September 2026.

Exam Schedule and Timings

The English paper will be held in the first shift from 9 am to 12 noon on 9 September. The Commerce paper follows in the second shift from 3 pm to 6 pm on the same day. The Sociology paper will be conducted on 10 September in the first shift from 9 am to 12 noon. All three re-examinations will take place at various centres nationwide, and only candidates who had originally opted for these subjects are eligible to appear.

Travel Advisory for Delhi Candidates

The NTA on Tuesday issued a specific advisory urging candidates appearing at centres in New Delhi to plan their journeys well in advance. The agency cited possible travel restrictions in the capital on Wednesday and Thursday, warning that road diversions and traffic delays could significantly extend commute times. Candidates were advised to check their routes beforehand, leave early, and carry sufficient buffer time to reach their centres before the reporting deadline.

The travel disruptions are linked to India hosting the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, scheduled for 12–13 September, which has prompted heightened security and traffic management measures across key arterial roads in the capital.

Why the Re-Examination Was Ordered

The NTA received multiple complaints from candidates and stakeholders alleging errors in the question papers for English, Commerce, and Sociology after the UGC NET 2026 exam was held in June 2026 across 87 subjects. The agency was also criticised for delays in releasing the answer key; the provisional answer key was eventually published on the preceding Sunday.

Following the complaints, the NTA constituted a committee to examine the alleged errors. Based on the committee's findings and recommendations, the agency decided to re-conduct the examinations in all three affected subjects to, as officials stated, 'ensure a fair and error-free examination'. Notably, candidates will not be charged any additional fees for the re-examination, and seat allocations will remain unchanged.

Impact on Results and Remaining Subjects

Results for the remaining 84 subjects will be declared as per the original schedule and are unaffected by the re-examination process. The UGC NET is a nationally significant assessment that determines eligibility for appointment as entry-level Assistant Professors, admission to PhD programmes, and the award of the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in government and private universities across India.

With the re-examination now underway, attention will turn to how swiftly the NTA processes results for the three affected subjects and whether the agency introduces additional quality-control measures for future paper-setting cycles.
