New Delhi, July 20 (NationPress) The CPI(M) has expressed strong disapproval regarding Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's assertion that the RSS and the Left party share similarities. Condemning Gandhi's remarks, CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby termed it an unnecessary statement that should not have been articulated.
In an interview with IANS, Baby emphasized that while they often critique the Congress party on various matters, they would never draw parallels between Congress and the BJP.
"We do criticize Congress when necessary, but we would never equate Congress with the BJP. In contrast, Mr. Rahul Gandhi has equated the RSS with the CPI(M), which is an unwanted comment that the Leader of the Opposition should have refrained from making," Baby stated.
During a tribute to former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in Puthuppally, Rahul Gandhi, who serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, claimed that both the RSS and CPI(M) lacked empathy. He made this remark while honoring Chandy on the second anniversary of his passing.
In his speech, Gandhi used the moment to subtly criticize both the CPI(M) and the RSS, suggesting that their leaders are disconnected from the feelings of the populace.
Rahul also accused the CPI(M) of orchestrating a slanderous campaign against Chandy, referencing the controversial solar scam case that the Left party used to target Chandy and the UDF during the elections in 2016 and 2021. Despite Chandy being cleared by the courts, the prolonged legal disputes reportedly affected his health.
The comparison made by Rahul, stating that neither the RSS nor the CPI(M) comprehends empathy, contrasts sharply with the quality Chandy represented. "I oppose them and challenge their ideas through speeches. However, my primary concern is their lack of connection with the people," said Gandhi.
He added, "If leaders do not engage with the people's emotions, they cannot truly lead. The unfortunate reality in Indian politics is that many leaders do not empathize with the populace," remarked the Congress MP.
The Left leaders did not immediately respond to Gandhi's comments. Journalist-turned-Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas, who is aligned with CM Vijayan, criticized Gandhi on social media.
Brittas stated, "The Congress appears to be intent on keeping Rahul Gandhi politically inexperienced," and further remarked, "He and his sister conduct so-called attacks on the RSS from the safety of Wayanad, the stronghold of their ally IUML—taking no risks while reaping rewards."
He added that Congress has a history of hypocrisy, referencing its involvement in "unlocking the gates of Babri Masjid, overseeing its demolition, and fostering the BJP's leadership." Brittas concluded by noting, "Ironically, much of Rahul's understanding of the RSS may have originated from our late leader, Sitaram Yechury."
