A massive explosion at an illegal firecracker factory in Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh, killed three people and left five others injured on Monday, 31 August, officials confirmed. The blast, reported at around 10:40 am IST, occurred at a factory operating near Manauri Bazar on the Kaushambi-Prayagraj border, triggering a chain of explosions that sent shockwaves through surrounding localities.

How the Blast Unfolded

Eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke rise from the factory premises before a sudden, rapid succession of firecracker blasts engulfed the structure. The force of the explosions shattered glass windows in nearby homes, scattered debris across a wide radius, and blanketed the area in a thick cloud of smoke. Continuous detonations initially prevented rescue teams from entering the site.

Police moved swiftly to cordon off the area and restrict civilian movement as the blasts continued. A fire brigade team was dispatched alongside six to eight ambulances to manage the emergency on the ground.

District Magistrate Vipin Pal reached the blast site and took stock of the rescue and relief efforts. He directed all teams to accelerate the search for anyone trapped beneath the debris and to ensure the injured received immediate medical attention.

'Information about the explosion at the firecracker factory on the Prayagraj-Kaushambi border was received at around 10.40 am. Rescue and relief operations are currently underway to find those trapped under the debris and provide medical care,' Pal said.

He added that anyone recovered from the debris was being transported immediately to the nearest hospital. 'So far, approximately three people have been reported dead, while approximately five are injured. The injured have been sent to SRN Hospital in Prayagraj, where they are receiving treatment,' he stated, cautioning that the figures were preliminary and subject to revision once rescue operations concluded.

Scale of Damage

The blast caused significant structural damage to several houses in the vicinity. According to preliminary information, the factory was housed within a residential structure at some distance from the main settlement — a common and hazardous arrangement in unlicensed firecracker units. Multiple people were reportedly present inside at the time of the accident.

Senior police and administrative officials from both Kaushambi and Prayagraj districts arrived at the scene as operations continued. The District Magistrate confirmed that the administration would share updated information as it became available.
