New Delhi, April 9 (NationPress) The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) in India’s urban regions saw an increase for males from 74.3 percent in 2023 to 75.6 percent in 2024, while there was a slight rise for females from 25.5 percent to 25.8 percent. This led to an overall increase from 50.3 percent to 51 percent, indicating a boost in employment opportunities, as per data released by the Ministry of Statistics on Wednesday.
Minor improvements were noted across all categories, particularly in the overall Worker Population Ratio (WPR), which also serves as an employment indicator, rising from 47 percent to 47.6 percent in urban areas. However, at the national level, the WPR remained fairly stable, changing from 53.4 percent to 53.5 percent, according to the official statement.
On a national scale, unemployment experienced a slight decrease from 5.0 percent to 4.9 percent, suggesting minor improvements in job availability, as noted in the official statement.
The decrease in unpaid helpers in household enterprises appears to have played a role in the decline of both WPR and LFPR among rural females, with the percentage of helpers in Household Enterprises falling from 19.9 percent to 18.1 percent between 2023 and 2024, the official statement revealed.
Quarterly data released earlier indicated that the LFPR among individuals aged 15 years and above in India’s urban areas rose to 50.4 percent during the quarter of October-December 2024, up from 49.9 percent in the same quarter the previous year, reflecting enhanced employment in the nation.
For males aged 15 years and above in urban regions, the LFPR increased to 75.4 percent during October-December 2024, compared to 74.1 percent in the same period in 2023, indicating a consistent upward trend in male LFPR.
The LFPR for females aged 15 and above in urban areas also improved to 25.2 percent during this quarter, up from 25 percent in the same timeframe the previous year.
The WPR for individuals aged 15 years and above in urban settings rose to 47.2 percent in October-December 2024 from 46.6 percent in the corresponding quarter of 2023.
For males aged 15 and above in urban areas, the WPR climbed to 70.9 percent during this quarter, from 69.8 percent in the same period last year, illustrating a general upward trend in male WPR.
