Bhubaneswar, Feb 28 (NationPress) The esteemed Odia actor Uttam Mohanty passed away on Thursday night while receiving treatment at a hospital in Gurugram, Haryana. He was 66 years old.
Numerous dignitaries, including Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, expressed their sorrow over the loss of this legendary figure in Odia cinema.
In a statement on Friday, CM Majhi referred to Mohanty as a “guiding star” of the Odia film sector. “For more than two decades, he was the undisputed hero of Odia cinema. He served as an icon in the Odia art community. His contributions to the industry are unmatched. In addition to his work in Odia films, Mohanty also appeared in numerous Bengali films and even a Hindi film, thereby enhancing the prestige of Odia cinema. His passing represents an irreplaceable loss to the realm of Odia art,” stated CM Majhi.
To honor Mohanty, the Chief Minister has instructed that his final rites be performed with full state honors.
CM Majhi also prayed for the peace of the departed soul and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family.
He reached out to Babushaan, an Odia film actor and Mohanty’s son, over the phone, assuring him that the state government would assist in transporting Mohanty’s remains from Delhi to Bhubaneswar.
It is worth noting that Mohanty was battling liver-related issues and was airlifted to Medanta Hospital for treatment on February 8.
His son Babushaan announced the news of his death late Thursday evening.
Reports indicate that Mohanty appeared in over 135 Odia films as well as several television serials. He also acted in 30 Bengali films and a Hindi film titled Naya Zaher.
Born and raised in Baripada, located in the Mayurbhanj district, Mohanty developed an interest in acting during his college years.
Uttam Mohanty is recognized as the only star in the Odia cinema landscape who maintained his peak status for nearly two decades, ruling the Odia film industry throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He was married to veteran Odia actress Aparajita Mohanty.
