Vadodara, Oct 24 (NationPress) The State Monitoring Cell (SMC) of Gujarat Police has uncovered a significant petrol and diesel theft operation functioning within the jurisdiction of the Jawahar Nagar Police Station in Vadodara.
Following a tip-off, law enforcement officials conducted a raid on an open area close to the Amma Roadways transport office, where it was reported that stolen fuel was being illegally siphoned, stored, and sold.
This operation led to the apprehension of four individuals, including the primary suspect, Shakeel Samunbhai Rangwala from Fatehgunj, who has a history of criminal activities.
During the raid, the SMC confiscated fuel valued at Rs 18.48 lakh along with cash, mobile devices, vehicles, and a tanker, bringing the overall seizure to Rs 44.25 lakh. The arrested accomplices were identified as employees and drivers who played roles in facilitating the illicit trade.
The operation, overseen by Police Inspector P.P. Brahmbhatt of the State Monitoring Cell, raises concerns about the effectiveness of local policing, as this illegal operation was conducted openly in a densely populated area. Despite previous interventions, fuel theft syndicates continue to operate without fear in Vadodara, signifying the urgent need for enhanced enforcement and stricter surveillance.
The issue of fuel theft—which includes diesel siphoned from municipal and industrial vehicles, as well as petrol or diesel pilfered from tankers—has become an escalating law-and-order challenge in Gujarat.
In recent months, several significant busts have been reported: in July 2025, authorities in Vadodara apprehended three individuals involved in stealing fuel from tankers of a major oil firm, seizing approximately 9,000 litres of diesel and petrol.
Previously, in Morbi district, a gang was dismantled for stealing 330 litres of diesel from parked vehicles, resulting in four arrests and the recovery of goods worth Rs 3.61 lakh. The state’s regulatory agencies are also taking action: for instance, the Legal Metrology Department conducted a special operation in July 2025, inspecting 267 petrol-diesel pumps across all 33 districts and initiating actions against 16 pumps flagged for irregularities.
