CMRL-Exalogic case: Veena Vijayan seeks more time to appear before ED
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Veena Thaikandi, daughter of former Kerala Chief Minister and Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan, has sought additional time from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to appear for questioning in the politically sensitive Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL)–Exalogic case, also known as the Masappadi (monthly payment) case. Citing health issues, she informed the agency via email on Friday, 11 June that she would be unable to appear as originally scheduled and requested a fresh date.
Why She Skipped Friday's Summons
Veena communicated her inability to appear through an email to the ED's Kochi office, citing health concerns. She assured the agency she was willing to furnish all documents sought and indicated that her lawyers would appear on her behalf to submit the required records. According to sources, her decision to seek more time came amid ongoing legal consultations over the potential consequences of appearing before the agency at this stage of the investigation.
What the ED Is Investigating
The probe centres on financial transactions between Veena's IT firm Exalogic and CMRL. The ED's investigation is based on findings by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), which allegedly detected financial irregularities linked to payments made by CMRL under questionable expense heads. Investigators are examining whether money laundering was involved in these transactions.
According to the investigation, Veena reportedly received ₹2.78 crore from CMRL between 2016 and 2021, in addition to a ₹50 lakh loan from Empower India Capital. The agency is scrutinising whether the payments were backed by genuine services, proper invoices, and tax records.
Scale of the Probe So Far
Earlier searches conducted by the ED at multiple locations resulted in the freezing of more than ₹18 crore across 242 accounts. Three accounts allegedly linked to Veena at Dhanlaxmi Bank and HDFC Bank were also examined by investigators. CMRL Managing Director S.N. Kartha, his family members, and other senior company officials have also been issued notices by the agency.
Political Fallout
The development has triggered a fresh political storm in Kerala, with the Opposition Leader's family facing heightened scrutiny. The Masappadi case has emerged as a significant political challenge for the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) leadership, with rival parties stepping up pressure on Vijayan and demanding accountability. The ED has agreed to grant a fresh date and is expected to issue a new summons shortly.
What Comes Next
With the probe entering a deeper phase, the coming days are expected to be crucial as the ED determines its next course of action. The agency's decision on the fresh summons date and any potential escalation will be closely watched by political observers across the state.
