Chennai, April 8 (NationPress) The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has officially assumed responsibility for the security of Tamil actor-turned-politician and President of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), C. Joseph Vijay.
This change comes after the Union Ministry of Home Affairs decided in February to grant ‘Y’ category security to the actor, informed by a threat perception report from central intelligence agencies. This security detail is limited to Tamil Nadu and involves 24/7 protection by Personal Security Officers (PSOs), an armed guard stationed at his residence, and security at various locations he visits.
Sources indicate that the CRPF’s VIP security division has taken charge of this duty.
As per the ‘Y’ category security arrangement, Vijay will travel with a contingent of seven to eight armed CRPF personnel, which includes two commandos, throughout Tamil Nadu. The security provisions also encompass two security vehicles and supplementary local police assistance as required. At 50 years old, Vijay stands as one of India’s leading film figures and was recognized as the second-highest celebrity taxpayer in the country by Fortune India Magazine last year.
He began his career as a child actor, making his lead debut in the 1992 Tamil film "Naalaiya Theerpu", directed by his father, S.A. Chandrasekhar.
Vijay has formally entered the political arena with the establishment of TVK, just prior to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
His latest film, "Jana Nayagan", directed by H. Vinoth, is anticipated to symbolize his complete shift from cinema to politics. Vijay’s political involvement is already creating significant ripples in Tamil Nadu, with his party positioning itself in opposition to both the ruling DMK and the BJP at the national level. His entry has triggered considerable restructuring within the state’s leading Dravidian parties - the DMK and the AIADMK - as they gear up for the 2026 Assembly elections.
