Tamil Nadu CM Vijay's 200 units free electricity hailed by Cong, CPI-M
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Newly sworn-in Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced 200 units of free electricity for households as one of the first major decisions of his government, drawing swift praise from alliance partners Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Sunday, 10 May. The announcement fulfils a key pledge from the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)'s election manifesto.
The Free Electricity Scheme Explained
Under the scheme, families consuming up to 500 units of electricity per billing cycle will not be charged for the first 200 units. Households consuming more than 500 units will continue to receive the existing benefit of 100 units of free electricity. The announcement was reportedly the first official order signed by Chief Minister Vijay after assuming office.
Alliance Partners Welcome the Move
Congress MP Imran Masood stressed the importance of honouring electoral commitments. "He (Vijay) should fulfill the promises he made in his manifesto. It is also necessary that a person who makes a promise must fulfill it," he said.
Congress leader Anand Srinivasan added: "We have already begun to fulfil the promises that the TVK made to the people of Tamil Nadu. The first signature that the new Chief Minister has put his hand on is to give 200 units of power free to the people of Tamil Nadu."
State CPI-M Secretary P. Shanmugam confirmed his party's endorsement, saying, "The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has welcomed this initiative."
How the TVK Came to Power
The TVK emerged as the single largest party in the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, winning 108 seats in the 234-member House. Congress, CPI-M, CPI, IUML, and VCK extended outside support to the Vijay-led formation, enabling it to cross the majority mark and form the government.
New Cabinet Sworn In
Alongside Chief Minister Vijay, a 10-member Cabinet was sworn in, comprising N. Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, K.G. Arunraj, K.A. Sengottaiyan, P. Venkataramanan, R. Nirmalkumar, Rajmohan, T.K. Prabhu, and S. Keerthan. The swearing-in ceremony marked a significant political shift in Tamil Nadu, ending decades of dominance by the state's traditional Dravidian parties.
What Comes Next
With the free electricity order in place, attention will now turn to the TVK government's broader manifesto commitments and how the alliance manages governance across a coalition dependent on multi-party support. Implementation timelines for the electricity scheme and the fiscal implications for the state exchequer are expected to be detailed in the coming weeks.
