Chennai, Nov 16 (NationPress) The Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), under the leadership of actor-politician Vijay, is set to conduct protests throughout Tamil Nadu today to voice their opposition against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls.

The party contends that the current revision process has led to significant confusion among voters, raising alarms about the risk of eligible citizens being left off the voter list.

District secretaries of TVK have obtained necessary police approvals to facilitate demonstrations in each district headquarters.

Key leaders within TVK expressed that the protests were initiated following numerous appeals from the public about the unclear procedures associated with the SIR. Many voters are reportedly uncertain about the new verification protocols and are worried that mistakes or holdups could lead to their names being excluded from the updated rolls.

TVK described the revision process as an “opaque and poorly communicated” initiative that has generated unnecessary anxiety among voters. In Chennai, the focal protest will commence on Sivananda Road, led by TVK general secretary Anand, with a significant turnout anticipated, including district secretaries, administrators, and members from various city sectors.

The party has instructed all officials in Tamil Nadu to actively engage in their respective district-level protests to maximize participation.

At the same time, TVK units in various other districts are organizing local demonstrations. These protests will address specific grievances related to the SIR, such as challenges in accessing forms, inconsistent guidance from officials, slow updates to records, and a general lack of awareness among voters and field personnel.

In a statement, TVK emphasized that the protests are aimed at safeguarding the democratic rights of the Tamil Nadu populace. The party criticized the authorities for undertaking “special and sweeping revisions” without adequate public education initiatives.

Furthermore, it pointed out that many citizens remain unclear about whether their names will be included in the updated electoral rolls, contributing to widespread uncertainty.

TVK also condemned the inadequate communication from officials concerning verification steps and deadlines, arguing that such shortcomings jeopardize voter confidence and risk disenfranchising legitimate voters.

Stressing that the right to vote is fundamental to democracy, the party asserted the necessity of challenging any processes that could unintentionally disenfranchise eligible citizens.

TVK warned that should authorities neglect to address the issues raised during the protests, they would escalate their agitation. The party has called for greater transparency, clearer communication, and a more efficient revision process to ensure that no eligible voter is omitted from the electoral rolls.
