Aizawl, Nov 11 (NationPress) The voting process for the by-election in Mizoram's Dampa Assembly constituency commenced on Tuesday morning, surrounded by robust security measures, according to election officials.

A significant turnout of both men and women formed long queues at the 41 polling stations in the Dampa segment, which opened at 7 a.m. Voting will continue in this diverse Assembly constituency located in Mamit district until 4 p.m., uninterrupted.

A total of 20,790 voters, including 10,185 women, are eligible to participate in selecting their preferred candidate from five contenders. This Assembly seat became vacant following the death of the Opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) legislator, Lalrintluanga Sailo, on July 21.

Notably, this Assembly segment shares an unfenced border with Bangladesh and is home to a considerable minority population, including members of the Chakma and Reang tribal communities.

To maintain law and order, Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel have been stationed at polling sites and nearby porous border areas.

This by-election features a five-way contest, as the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has endorsed Mizo singer and preacher Vanlalsailova, while the MNF has nominated its Vice-President and former Health Minister, R. Lalthangliana.

The Congress has put forth its State Vice-President and former Transport Minister, John Rotluangliana, while the BJP has nominated Lalhmingthanga.
