New Delhi, June 9 (NationPress) Following the tragic fate of the Indore couple, Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon trip to the Northeastern state, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma took a stand on Monday to counter the 'negative perception' that has emerged after the couple's reported murder.

In an exclusive interview with IANS, Sangma expressed his sadness and dismay over the adverse media coverage related to the alleged murder of the newlyweds while they were enjoying their honeymoon in his state.

He emphasized that Meghalaya is known for its peace-loving atmosphere, where residents treat tourists as family and guests, urging everyone to put aside any doubts regarding their safety while visiting.

Discussing the ongoing investigation, he mentioned that Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav reached out to him recently regarding the couple's disappearance and insisted on prompt action.

"The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh contacted me before the couple went missing, requesting that I hasten the search efforts. It was shortly after our discussion that the husband's body was found. I also communicated with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and assured him that a police investigation was underway and that the mystery would soon be unraveled," he informed IANS.

The discovery of the husband's body from a deep gorge and the apprehension of wife Sonam Raghuvanshi in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, added a new layer to the case.

Chief Minister Sangma noted that there were fragments of evidence suggesting misconduct by non-locals, asserting that the Meghalaya Police would bring the 'honeymoon murder' case to a logical conclusion.

Moreover, he dismissed fears regarding the Northeastern state being 'unsafe' for travelers, highlighting that Meghalaya is a tourism-centric state where locals show deep respect towards visitors.

"This isolated incident should not cause anxiety or dismay. I assure everyone that Meghalaya remains a peaceful region, and our government will implement further measures to enhance tourists' experiences," he added.

The newlyweds, Raja Raghuvanshi (29) and Sonam Raghuvanshi (24), traveled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon on May 21. They went missing three days later, and after extensive search efforts, Raja's body was located on June 2 in a gorge in East Khasi Hills, showing multiple wounds indicative of murder.

Point of View

It is essential to approach this incident with a balanced perspective. While the tragic death of Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi has understandably raised alarms, it is crucial to recognize that such incidents, though deeply saddening, do not define the overall safety and hospitality of Meghalaya. The government's proactive measures and the local community's commitment to tourism should not be overlooked.
