Kolkata, Oct 9 (NationPress) Two additional individuals have been apprehended in relation to the assault on BJP MP Khagen Murmu on Thursday, increasing the total number of arrests in this incident to four.
On Wednesday, the Nagrakata Police in the Jalpaiguri district detained two suspects linked to the attack on Murmu and BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh, which occurred on Monday. The identities of the arrested individuals remain undisclosed.
Earlier today, two more suspects were taken into custody following an overnight search operation. The police have identified the arrested individuals as Shahanur Alam and Tofayen Hossain.
All suspects will be presented at a district court later today, where police will request their custody.
"Two more arrests have been made today. A total of four individuals are now in custody concerning the attack on BJP leaders from Monday. We are actively searching for other culprits involved in this incident," stated a senior officer from the Jalpaiguri district police.
Murmu and MLA Ghosh faced significant protests last Monday while attempting to deliver aid to the flood-impacted areas in Nagrakata.
A large group assaulted the BJP leaders with sticks and shoes, while stones were thrown at their vehicle.
Murmu sustained severe facial injuries, and both leaders were subsequently hospitalized for medical care.
While Ghosh was discharged on Wednesday, Murmu is scheduled for facial surgery, with a metal plate likely to be inserted in his left cheekbone.
The BJP has filed a complaint against eight individuals at the Nagrakata Police Station and has protested outside the station, demanding action against the offenders.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, and others visited Murmu in the hospital.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the Mamata Banerjee administration for the attack, stating that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has requested an immediate report from the Bengal government regarding the incident.
