Chandigarh, May 2 (NationPress) The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) firmly stated on Friday that it will not accept the exploitation of Punjab's water resources. They categorically condemned the recent decision to allocate an extra 8,500 cusecs of water to Haryana, labeling it as a direct assault on federalism, demanding its immediate reversal.
During an all-party meeting on water distribution convened by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, senior SAD figures Balwinder Singh Bhundar and Daljit Singh Cheema expressed concerns over the state's previous injustices, where the Riparian Principle was ignored, leading to arbitrary water distribution to neighboring states.
“Currently, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has allocated additional water to Haryana beyond its rightful share without consulting the Punjab government. This situation has been exacerbated by the transfer of BBMB officials to facilitate this unjust decision,” they noted.
Emphasizing the infringement on federalism, the SAD leaders declared: “We have organized protests to protect our river water rights. During our previous administration, we returned the land where the Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL) canal is situated back to farmers. Our commitment to protect farmers’ interests is unwavering, and we will not allow a single drop of extra water to flow to Haryana.”
The SAD leaders pledged their support for the Punjab government's efforts to protect the state’s river waters.
“Our goal is to achieve justice for Punjab, whether through negotiations or legal action. The Central government must also ensure that justice prevails for Punjab,” they affirmed.
They further emphasized the necessity of challenging the Central government’s reconstitution of the BBMB.
The leaders criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for not contesting the BBMB's reconstitution in court, which they believe has led to the current injustices faced by Punjab.
Furthermore, they condemned the systematic transfer of Punjab officers within the BBMB, aimed at swaying decisions against the state's interests.
Both Bhundar and Cheema also advocated for extensive talks with the Central government regarding all contentious issues affecting the state, including the status of Chandigarh, discrimination in postings related to Chandigarh, and the non-implementation of the Punjabi language.
