Kolkata, Oct 15 (NationPress) A woman and her daughter have been apprehended for allegedly stealing a newborn from Burdwan Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal, as reported by the police on Wednesday.
Rinki Khatun, also known as Rumki Khatun, along with her mother, Minira Bibi, were detained on Tuesday night.
Following reports that an 18-year-old boy had been abducted from Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, authorities acted swiftly and began an investigation.
Initial inquiries revealed that the incident transpired when the infant's mother, Selefah Khatun, had taken him to the outdoor children's ward for a medical consultation.
While Selefah Khatun and her mother were seated with the child on the maternity ward's veranda, a woman approached them, requesting to hold the baby. In an unexpected turn, the woman seized the child and fled.
Panic ensued as the child's mother raised an alarm.
After media coverage of the theft, locals grew suspicious of the baby in Rinki Khatun's possession. Some neighbors proceeded to her residence, a rented space in Uttarpara, located near the Khagragarh area of East Burdwan district.
A senior official from the Burdwan district police stated, "Khatun attempted to deceive the neighbors, but they became wary. Subsequently, they alerted the police about the situation."
"Upon receiving the report, officers from Burdwan police station rushed to Khagragarh and successfully rescued the baby. Both women have been charged with child theft," the official noted.
The police are currently investigating the motives behind the women's actions.
With the suspects apprehended, the infant has been readmitted to the maternity ward of Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, much to the relief of the family, who were delighted to be reunited with their child.
