New Delhi, May 27 (NationPress) As fears grow regarding mass deportations by the US, along with a new warning directed at Indian and other foreign students about the risks of skipping classes or withdrawing from their courses, a foreign policy expert has raised alarms over the current atmosphere.
Robinder Sachdev noted that while the warning holds some validity, the general climate in the US has become more antagonistic towards immigrants.
"On one level, what America is saying is correct. Students on visas are expected to attend classes regularly, maintain good academic standing, and continue their studies. If they fail to do so, they are violating the terms of their visa. Thus, America’s warning makes sense from that viewpoint," Sachdev conveyed to IANS.
However, he pointed out a more profound issue.
"The atmosphere in the US has turned anti-immigrant. There's a rising sentiment that no immigrant—be it a student or an H1B tech worker—should be permitted entry. Under the Trump administration, there was heightened scrutiny of students, particularly those engaging in political activities or protests. Even minor infractions, such as a traffic violation, are now grounds for visa cancellation," he explained.
He further mentioned that universities have been instructed to report any charges or concerns related to international students. "Any student with even a minor charge against them is being flagged. The administration is actively cancelling visas in such scenarios. This creates a very concerning environment for international students in the US," Sachdev added.
This warning comes on the heels of a series of mass deportation initiatives executed by the US government earlier this year, many of which specifically targeted students and other immigrants.
In response, numerous colleges across the US have released advisories advising international students to refrain from traveling outside the country to avoid the risk of visa complications or cancellations.
The escalating anxiety among foreign students mirrors a broader transformation in US immigration policy, where even valid visa holders are now experiencing increased scrutiny and uncertainty regarding their future in the nation.
