What does the recent WHO report reveal about mpox cases and fatalities?

Synopsis

In October, the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed a concerning rise in mpox cases globally, reporting 2,501 new confirmations and 12 fatalities across 44 countries. This alarming trend highlights the persistent threat of the monkeypox virus as it continues to spread through community transmission. Stay informed about the latest developments in this public health crisis.

Key Takeaways

  • A total of 2,501 new confirmed mpox cases were reported in October.
  • The report indicated 12 fatalities linked to mpox.
  • Active transmission occurred in 21 countries in Africa.
  • New cases of clade Ib MPXV were found among travelers in various nations.
  • Community transmission is ongoing in several countries including Italy and the US.

New Delhi, Dec 9 (NationPress) The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Tuesday that there were 2,501 new confirmed cases of mpox, along with 12 fatalities, across 44 countries in October. The latest report on the ongoing multi-country outbreak indicates that various clades of the monkeypox virus (MPXV) are still in circulation.

If mpox outbreaks aren't swiftly controlled, and human-to-human transmission isn't halted, there's a significant danger of sustained community spread.

“In October 2025, 44 countries from all WHO regions reported a total of 2,501 new confirmed mpox cases, including 12 deaths (with a case fatality ratio [CFR] of 0.5 percent),” the WHO report stated.

During the six weeks from October 12 to November 23, 21 countries in Africa reported ongoing mpox transmission, with 1,734 confirmed cases and 10 deaths.

The Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda recorded the highest case numbers, while Mali noted its first mpox report.

New cases linked to clade Ib MPXV were identified among travelers in Belgium, Germany, Greece, and the United Kingdom.

From September 5 to November 24, a total of 43 new confirmed cases of mpox related to clade Ib MPXV were observed across six WHO regions, outside areas of ongoing community transmission of this specific strain.

Within four regions (the Americas, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Western Pacific), 24 cases did not report recent international travel, indicating potential local transmission.

Consequently, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the US have now been identified as experiencing community transmission of clade Ib MPXV.

Moreover, travel-related cases continue to be documented across numerous nations. Among the 43 cases, half (22) were reported among men who engage in sexual relations with men, while other cases were associated with travel to nations experiencing community transmission of clade Ib MPXV or secondary to travel-related instances (household contacts and/or sexual partners).

However, the WHO assesses the public health risk posed by clade Ib MPXV as moderate for men who have sexual partners with new and/or multiple partners, while the risk for the general populace remains low.

Mpox, or monkeypox, is a viral infectious disease that spreads through close contact. Symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, muscle aches, skin rash, and back pain. Its primary mode of transmission is through skin-to-skin contact.
