Dr. Jitendra Singh Advocates for Strong Science Communication to Combat Misinformation

New Delhi, Nov 29 (NationPress) Effective science communicators are essential for making knowledge accessible to everyone and for dispelling myths, stated Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh on Friday.
He made these remarks while presenting the "Dr. Mangalam Swaminathan National Awards for Excellence 2024", established in memory of the late journalist Mangalam Swaminathan, who was a pioneer in the fields of science journalism and communication before her passing in 2017.
“Mangalam was among the early proponents of science reporting and journalism in India, a practice that had already gained traction in western media,” Singh noted.
The award recognized remarkable individuals from various disciplines for their significant contributions.
Singh stressed the crucial importance of specialized science journalism in advancing India's development.
“In a world that is continuously evolving, effective science communication is vital for transforming innovations into benefits for society,” he commented.
He further explained that “scientific advancements can only lead to societal benefits when the public is adequately informed and engaged.”
The Minister highlighted the need to foster a culture of specialized science journalism in India, which will “help dispel myths, simplify complex subjects, and make scientific knowledge more accessible.”
He pointed out that while specialized journalists in western countries often focus on specific domains like science or war reporting, in India, the same journalist frequently covers a variety of topics, which diminishes the depth of expertise.
In honoring Dr. Mangalam Swaminathan, Singh remarked that her legacy inspires the promotion of science literacy. He emphasized that her contributions “bridge the gap between scientific advancements and public understanding.”
He also mentioned the progress made in science and technology under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, highlighting initiatives such as advancements in quantum technology, the bio-economy policy, and the Lavender Start-Up movement, popularly known as the “Purple Revolution.”
