Hyundai Motor India Q4 profit plunges 22% to ₹1,255.6 crore despite 5.4% revenue growth

Synopsis

Hyundai Motor India's Q4 profit tumbled 22% despite revenue growth, a classic margin-squeeze story. The automaker's inability to pass cost inflation to customers—evidenced by EBITDA margin collapse from 14.1% to 10.4%—reveals the pricing pressure facing India's auto industry. Yet record rural penetration and CNG adoption signal where growth is coming from.

Hyundai Motor India Limited on Friday, 8 May reported a 22.2 per cent year-on-year decline in consolidated net profit for the fourth quarter (Q4) of FY26 at ₹1,255.6 crore, down from ₹1,614.3 crore in Q4 FY25. Revenue from operations, however, grew 5.4 per cent to ₹18,916.15 crore in the January-March quarter, up from ₹17,940.28 crore a year earlier, according to the company's stock exchange filing.

Margin squeeze narrows profitability

The automaker's expenses rose faster than revenue during the quarter, with total costs climbing 10 per cent year-on-year to ₹17,571.7 crore, primarily driven by changes in inventories of finished goods, work-in-progress, and stock-in-trade. EBITDA fell 22.4 per cent to ₹1,966 crore from ₹2,532.7 crore a year earlier, while the EBITDA margin contracted sharply to 10.4 per cent from 14.1 per cent in the same period last fiscal.

Sales volumes and market reach expand

Despite margin pressures, Hyundai Motor India reported its highest-ever quarterly domestic sales in Q4 FY26, with wholesale volumes rising 8.7 per cent year-on-year, supported by GST 2.0 tailwinds and targeted product interventions. The company also achieved its highest-ever quarterly rural penetration of 25 per cent, reflecting deeper market reach across rural India. Its CNG portfolio contribution touched a record 18 per cent during the quarter, driven by growing consumer adoption and expansion into the commercial mobility segment.

Export momentum remains resilient

Exports grew 9.4 per cent year-on-year during Q4, while full-year FY26 exports rose 16.4 per cent, demonstrating resilience despite geopolitical uncertainties. This strong export performance partially offset domestic margin compression.

Outlook and strategic focus for FY27

The company projects domestic and export volume growth of 8-10 per cent in FY27, supported by new product launches, network expansion, and market diversification initiatives. Tarun Garg, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, stated: "As we celebrate 30 years of operations in India, we take pride in building a strong foundation anchored in customer trust, innovation, and consistent execution." Garg added that FY26 demonstrated the company's ability to navigate challenges while capitalising on emerging opportunities, supported by GST 2.0 reforms and a continued focus on "Quality of Growth."

Point of View

Likely due to competitive intensity and rural-market pricing pressure. The 25% rural penetration and 18% CNG mix are bright spots, but they're also lower-margin segments. Unless Hyundai can stabilise input costs or command premium pricing on new launches, FY27's projected 8-10% volume growth may simply amplify the squeeze.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Hyundai Motor India's Q4 profit fall despite revenue growth?
Hyundai's net profit fell 22.2% to ₹1,255.6 crore in Q4 FY26 because total expenses climbed 10% year-on-year, faster than the 5.4% revenue growth. This cost inflation—driven by changes in inventory and production costs—compressed EBITDA margins from 14.1% to 10.4%, eroding profitability despite higher sales.
What drove the EBITDA margin contraction?
EBITDA fell 22.4% to ₹1,966 crore, with the margin narrowing sharply to 10.4% from 14.1% a year earlier. The primary cause was a 10% year-on-year increase in total expenses, mainly due to changes in inventories of finished goods and work-in-progress, which the company could not fully offset through pricing.
Which segments showed strongest growth for Hyundai India in Q4?
Wholesale volumes rose 8.7% year-on-year, supported by GST 2.0 tailwinds. Rural penetration hit a record 25%, and the CNG portfolio contribution reached a record 18%, reflecting strong adoption in the commercial mobility segment.
What is Hyundai Motor India's growth outlook for FY27?
The company projects domestic and export volume growth of 8-10% in FY27, supported by new product launches, network expansion, and market diversification initiatives. Exports grew 16.4% in full-year FY26, demonstrating resilience despite geopolitical headwinds.
How long has Hyundai Motor India been operating in the country?
Hyundai Motor India is celebrating 30 years of operations in India as of FY26, anchoring its strategy on customer trust, innovation, and consistent execution.
