What Causes Unexplained Sudden Deaths? Insights from an ICMR Study

Synopsis
Key Takeaways
- Covid vaccination does not increase the risk of unexplained sudden death.
- A family history of sudden deaths is a significant risk factor.
- Severe Covid-19 hospitalizations contribute to unexplained sudden deaths.
- Specific lifestyle behaviors like binge drinking and substance use are linked to increased risk.
- Engaging in vigorous physical activity before death may correlate with sudden fatalities.
New Delhi, July 7 (NationPress) Hospitalizations resulting from severe Covid-19 infections, a family history of abrupt deaths, and certain lifestyle habits are among the factors contributing to unexplained sudden deaths, according to a study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
This peer-reviewed research, published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research, investigated the factors linked to unexplained sudden deaths among adults aged 18-45 years in India.
Importantly, it revealed that Covid vaccination was not a cause of the sudden and unexplained deaths observed in otherwise healthy individuals.
The study, conducted in 2023, followed anecdotal reports of sudden, unexplained fatalities in India's seemingly healthy young adults, which were associated with Covid-19 infection or vaccination.
"Covid-19 vaccination did not elevate the risk of unexplained sudden death among young adults in India. However, a history of past Covid-19 hospitalization, a family history of sudden death, and specific lifestyle choices increased the likelihood of such deaths," the researchers stated.
Utilizing a multicentric matched case-control design, the team engaged 729 cases and 2,916 controls from 47 tertiary care hospitals across India.
The cases involved apparently healthy individuals aged 18-45 years without known co-morbidities who suddenly died of unexplained causes between October 2021 and March 2023.
For each case, four controls were matched based on age, gender, and neighborhood.
The research group collected data through interviews and record reviews concerning Covid vaccination or infection, family history of sudden death, smoking, recreational drug usage, alcohol consumption frequency, binge drinking, and vigorous-intensity physical activity performed within 48 hours prior to death/interviews.
“The findings indicated that receiving at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine significantly reduced the odds of unexplained sudden death,” the researchers mentioned. Furthermore, receiving two doses further diminished these odds.
Conversely, “a history of past Covid-19 hospitalization, a family history of sudden death, binge drinking within 48 hours of death, recreational drug use, or vigorous physical activity performed 48 hours prior to death were positively correlated with these unexplained deaths,” the team added.
